A Life Poured Out in Service: The Ministry Journey of Evangelist Gwendolyn Mitchell
At AK New Beginnings Church, we are grateful for the faithful servants God has placed within our church family. One of those individuals is Evangelist Gwendolyn Mitchell, whose life has been marked by decades of service, compassion, and dedication to the work of the Lord.
For more than 27 years, Gwendolyn has faithfully served God with thanksgiving and praise, grounded in her Apostolic faith. Her spiritual journey began as a child at Emmanuel Apostolic Temple in San Antonio, Texas. After her family relocated to Dallas, she continued growing in ministry under the leadership of Bishop Leon Parker at Zion Apostolic Temple and later at Soul’s Refuge, where her father, the late Elder Melvin Mitchell, and her mother, Evangelist Josephine Mitchell, served as pastor.
Though Soul’s Refuge was small in size, it was rich in faith and ministry. Gwendolyn became known for her willingness to serve wherever needed. Whether leading testimonies, coordinating special services, singing in the choir, or investing time into the lives of young people, she faithfully answered God’s call to serve. Many youth remember her not only for organizing activities, but for simply showing up — providing rides to church, encouragement, and consistent love.
Since joining New Beginnings Church in Fairbanks in 2009, Gwendolyn has continued that same heart of service. Over the years, she has taught Bible studies and Sunday School classes, served as mistress of ceremonies during church events, and faithfully carried responsibilities as a board member and church treasurer. Her willingness to serve has never been limited to one role — she simply allows God to use her wherever needed.
Gwendolyn also made a lasting impact through the Women’s Ministry by creating and hosting the annual Rainbow Tea Extravaganza, a faith-based community event that became one of the most memorable gatherings in Fairbanks for nine consecutive years prior to the COVID pandemic.
In 2016, under the leadership of the late Pastor Mathew Hampton, founder of New Beginnings Church, Gwendolyn accepted her calling into ministry and was licensed as a minister. Before retiring due to medical issues, Pastor Hampton ordained her as an Evangelist in September 2023. Today, she continues serving faithfully at New Beginnings under the leadership of Pastors Linda and Mike Setterberg.
Outside of ministry, Gwendolyn has also dedicated her life to serving others professionally. A graduate of Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas, Texas, she later earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Alaska and her Master of Social Work degree from the University of New England. She currently works as a Behavioral Health Consultant with Tanana Chiefs Conference at the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and substance use challenges.
Above all, Gwendolyn treasures her family. She is the mother of three, the proud “Nonna” of four grandchildren, a loving sister, daughter, mentor, and friend to many. Her life reflects a deep commitment not only to ministry, but to people — always willing to encourage, support, and stand beside those in need.
We are thankful for Evangelist Gwendolyn Mitchell and the example of faithfulness she continues to be at New Beginnings Church and throughout the Fairbanks community.
